Horticulture

Intensive horticultural production has a high yield potential, and therefore a high demand for nutrients.  Horticultural crops remove much larger amounts of potassium per hectare than grain crops because of the tonnage of product removed.

In the case of some crops, like broccoli, the removal of large amounts of vegetative material like leaves and stems also contributes to very high removal rates. Reproductive material, like grains and kernels, usually has a lower potassium concentration. See this table for the potassium content of some common horticultural products.

A guide to the potassium removal rate of a range of horticultural crops at typical yields.
